I'm taking bets on how many years it will take San Diego Comic Con to officially change its name to something like San Diego Pop Culture Expo or whatever. Just how long will it take to get that "Comic" out of there? When the Oscar winners start showing up, the winds are changing.

I'm gonna argue that's not a bad thing. The first time I went I was drawn by the more pop-culture-y aspects, and I got exposed to a shitload of comic stuff, enough to spark my interest in getting back into comics for the first time since I was about 13. The same was true about this time around. For example, I just picked up the first two volumes of the Goon and I enjoyed the hell out of them.
So, y'know. It works both ways.

I don't think comics will ever be totally excised from the Con. Far from it. But I think the big media outlets are going to take up more and more space, and will really become (if they haven't already) the tentpoles of the Con. An MSN article I was reading referred to it as "America's geekiest movie convention," and I think that's more where we're headed. Marvel and DC saved several of their big announcements for WizardWorld Chicago in a few weeks. But no, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. Just different. I think any exposure to comics is good, especially if someone (like you) comes in and finds a comic they might not have encountered out in the world.
In other news, I'm glad you like The Goon. That's some good comics, right there.
