5 Sequels That Are Better Than the Original
1) Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey
2) Addams Family Values
3) Toy Story 2
4) X2
5) Batman Returns
These are in no particular order. And sometimes I'll explain my reasoning, sometimes I won't. This is a won't.

Batman, I think, is largely a matter of taste. They're two pretty different films. Bogus Journey, however, is clearly the superior B&T film. I mean, come on. Excellent Adventure is great, but it has a total lack of Good Robot Us-es.
I am already such a fan of Arbitrary List Week.
Terminator 2 -- perhaps the best sequel ever.
Good point. As you may notice, I'm just whipping these off the top of my head here.
Huh. Today, for no particular reason, I decided to change the headline of my MySpace profile to "I don't think I can do infinity push-ups." Then I hop over here and see today's blog entry. Coincidence?
5 Sequels That, While Sometimes Overlooked, And Certainly Different Than Their Originals, May Be Just as Strong In Their Own Ways
1) Superman II
2) The Godfather Part II
3) Henry IV, Part II
4) The Two Towers: Extended Edition
5) Sanjuro

4 Sequels That Jeff Totally Thinks Are Better Than the Original But Just Forgot to Mention
1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) Before Sunset
3) Return to Oz
4) Another Stakeout
Seriously, though...
5) Spiderman 2
Spider-Man 2 was on my initial list but then I threw Batman Returns in there for a bit more variety (at least in terms of release dates).
Frank, the only sequels on your "Overlooked, but Just As Strong" list that would actually qualify are Henry IV, Part II and Sanjuro.
Superman II is often cited as being better than the first. LOTR: TT EE is often cited as not only being better than LOTR: FOTR, but also better than the theatrical cut of itself, and everyone knows that The Godfather Part II is just fetid trash.
Whoever says the theatrical cut of Two Towers is better than Fellowship is high. But the Towers extended edition is the best movie of them all.
