For Asa
Considering Lost's glacial, "decompressed" pacing, should we be entertaining the idea that perhaps this is the first TV program specifically tailored to be released on DVD and watched in great big chunks? Think about it!
Just a man, with a man's courage.

I actually feel that Lost would play better when viewed in big sections. Rather than spending the last six weeks tearing my hair out because no one's going to look for Claire, I could just jet right throught it and hey, now she's back! That way episodes that honestly contribute nothing (Kate's briefcase episode) would just breeze by. But I've made my feelings about Lost's "mystery" well known. Just give us SOMETHING, dammit!
Frank and I were discussing this topic in reference to Buffy season 7 the other day. I was saying how season 7 would probably play even more poorly the second time around, since we know all the build-up (and that's the whole season, really) amounts to very little. I cited how we spent weeks wondering if Giles was dead and the Giles in Buffy's house was the First and it totally turned out to be a non-issue. Frank noted that now that entire mystery could play itself out in an afternoon, so you might feel less cheated then when you put in weeks of thought towards the notion.
But yeah, as far as rewatchability goes, I think Lost and Buffy are both hobbled. Buffy because you know the build-up doesn't go anywhere, and Lost because, well, I keep having the feeling that overarching mystery will be a big letdown. And the more the show dicks us around week in and week out while refusing to tell us anything at all, the more I'm convinced that that's true.
For first time viewers, though, I think both would benefit from being seen on DVD. And DVD has spoiled me, too. I mean, once Lost comes out on DVD, it'll be in widescreen, as it was meant to be seen. There's really no advantage to setting aside a chunk of your Wednesday night, unless you're always home then to begin with.
